Connecticut Now a Travel Nurse Licensure Compact State
October 9, 2025
by Voyage Healthcare
Big news, travel nurses! Connecticut has officially joined the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). This means nurses with a multistate license can now work in Connecticut without getting a new license. That makes it easier to travel, work, and help more people.
What Is the Nurse Licensure Compact?
The Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) lets nurses use one license to work in many states. Basically, instead of applying for new licenses each time you move, you can use the same one across all compact states. Because of this, travel nurses have more freedom to work where they want. In addition, it helps hospitals fill jobs faster and makes care for patients more consistent. As a result, both nurses and employers benefit from smoother, faster hiring processes.
Connecticut Makes It Official
All in all, Connecticut’s decision is a big step for nurses!
For example, Rep. Cristin McCarthy Vahey said:
“By joining the Compact, Connecticut has created more options for nurses, patients, students, and employers to help our residents be healthy, safe, and strong.”
So now, nurses can take jobs in Connecticut more easily and start helping patients sooner. Furthermore, this change opens new doors for travel nurses who want to explore the East Coast while continuing their careers.
More States Are Joining Soon
But that’s not all! Several states are already working on bills to join the Compact, too. These include:
- Alaska, Washington, D.C., Hawaii, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New York and Oregon
When these states join, traveling across the country to work as a nurse will be even easier and faster.
What “Pending” Means
If a state has “pending legislation,” it means that right now, lawmakers are still deciding. In other words, the state wants to join, but for now, the law isn’t final yet.
So, nurses there don’t have multistate privileges yet — but once the bill passes, they’ll be able to get a compact license and work in other states freely.
